During chapters 6-9 I noticed how Wyly was always optimistic when starting a new project or launching a new idea. I believe that this optimism is in part responsible for Wyly's success.
In chapters 6-9 Wyly speaks very confidently of IBM. Wyly is sure of the company that employed him and becoming sure of himself. In chapter 6 he remarks, "We had 90 percent of the market, they had 10 percent, and that's how god intended it to be." Confidence is a key characteristic in entrepreneurship and Wyly is definitely confident.
On page 58, Wyly is talking about how he came across an IBM study that tried to justify a $3 million IBM 7090 computer center in North Texas. Ibm ran a survey and concluded that it would not be possible, that there wouldn't be enough market. That did not stop Wyly even though he only had $1000 not $3 million. With his money and an idea he set his sights on a new business plan and thought of all the possible ways to make it happen. This showed me the perseverance that every entrepreneur must have in order for them to be successful.
Chapter 9, page 81- “In 1966 when our little company was just two years old, I said that by 1975 computers and information technology would be a multibillion dollar industry and that half its value would derive from software and services I wrote in the company’s 1966 annual report ‘We intend that UCC shall have a leading position in this market. ’” The first step in accomplishing your goals is to say what your goals are.
I found Chapters 6-9 to be very informative, it was nice to hear how sure wyly was about IBM, he had a drive for IBM, and he was sure that it would end up really paying off. It was nice to hear about the goals that he set for his company, goals really seem to be the basis of a business, the expectations are always part of the success.
Throughout chapters 6-9, Wyly shows possibly his greatest characterist of being an entrepreneur and that is confidence. He talks about how IBM had confidence in him and how he was confident in IBM. This has gotten Wyly to where he is today, being confident in his ideas and following through on them
in these chapters , he seemed very confident in IBM and talked very strongly about it . he has everything planned out and great goals set . it really takes some serious perserverance to suceed as an entrepreneur .
Page 82: "Creating an environment to attract and hold able people was the easy part. The hard part was learning how to be a good manager: Right after we started, when I was spending a lot of time setting up in Tulsa, I could not figure out why some employees were not doing what I wanted them to do. Then it hit me that I had never told them exactly what I wanted them to do. I was just expecting them to know, as if they would read my mind. So I had to find ways to set goals with a two-way feedback." It was interesting to see how Sam described his first time becoming the president of the company.
Wyly was always confident in his business, no matter how it was doing at the time he knew that it would eventually become sucessful. He was persistant in his ideasd about how to run the IBM business and never gave in to doubts that he wouldn't be sucessful. I believe that it was through this determination and confidence that Mr. Wyly became who he is today.
In chapters 6-9 I felt that wyly was very confident and always took an optimistic view on things. For example, whenever he started a new project he always looked at the good in things. Personaly I think that this lead to much of his success.
At the start of chapter 6 I read something that was different from all the other buisness related books I've read. Sam encourages you not to share you idea in its infancy so that it doesn't die from negativity. All the other things i have read say that you should share with as many people you can to get more benficial input. While I don't agree with what Sam says I think that he make a interesting point
In chapters 6-9 Wyly speaks very confidently of the company. Sam was confident of the company that hired him. What I took out of these chapters confidence is a key characteristic in entrepreneurship and buisness.
I liked chapters 6-9 becuase Wyly shows how to be a great entrepreneur. I loved the part when Wyly talked about the 3 million computer. I also liked about the chapters is whenever Wyly made somthing he always looked at the good side of it and he never was sad about it.
Sam wyly now has his own group of sales men, programmers and hardware builders. Sam wryly borrowed 600,000 dolor’s from a bank with the help of the honey well and sun well companies to be a big success. The honey well company went public in the stock market it was 4.5 $ in 1965 and 4 years later it went to 9$ but in 1966 it was 27$ but cut in half on tight money squeeze.
"Initially, when i have an idea, i tend to be protective of it. Sure, there comes a time when you need to brainstorm with trusted advisers-whether it's a spouse , a close friend, a business associate, or a board member-because eventually you need to get other people's insights. But in the beginning, you need to be self-relient and to nurture and safeguard you idea. As Mary Baker Eddy teaches you, you need to protect your good idea from other people's negativity until it's out of its infancy." I'm not 100% sure why this quote caught my eye but after I read it I felt like I knew exactly what he was trying to say to those reading the book. What I got from this quote was that it's great to have what feels like an amazing idea but before you rush out and get help with it, personalize that idea so it becomes/stays your idea before to much outside infacist comes into play. I can see why this man is now rich, he's knows what he's talking about.
Sam Wyly did show good optimism and confidence in these few chapters. I agree with what everyone says and also like Josh said I believe that optimism is part responsible for Wyly's success.
