Target is thriving becasue they learned the lessons of discounts business. Kmart is gone because they didn't.
Wyly explains simply that if a business does not learn and adapt from the past, they will not survive. This is key advice in the world of entrepreneurship.
Page 194: "But that's only one of the reasons I pick Walton as the twentieth century's outstanding entreprenuer. Another is because Walton himself was totally positive. He was a fabulous salesman, a great buyer, and a diligent researcher." Sam Wyly described the success of an earlier entreprenuer, Sam Walton, the creator of Wal-Mart.
pg 191 "When I created University computing I knew I had found my calling" I like how sam truly found something that he was passionate about, and that he would continuely evolve as he climbed up the corporate ladder. He originally saw himself as a computer guy, but says he evolved into an entrepeneur.
In this chapter I liked how he talked about the different businesses that thrived and the ones that failed. I also enjoyed how he talked about his envy of Walton and how he looks up to the way that runs his business. It's also nice to see that Mr. Wyly was able to find what he enjoyed doing most, often times you find people who hate their jobs and he is a good example of somebody who ended up finding something that he really loved.
I liked how Mr. Wyly talked about different businesses like Target and Kmart and why they are having success. I also liked how he talks about how much he enjoys his job and is loving his life.
Chapters 18 and 19 illustrate Wyly's mentality as an entrepreneur. In the chapters he explains how he has always followed his heart and did what interests him. Earlier in his career when going out for a job he was instructed to cut his hair but refused simply because it wasn't him. Wyly stresses the importance of doing what your heart desires mainly because you will be motivated in doing so.
What i liked in these chapters were how he mentioned other businesses and which ones failed or succeeded and how they did it. This gives a understanding of how some ideas fail and some succeed.
He says, “There is only one customer,” Walton used to preach: “the customer. And she can fire everyone in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending her money somewhere else.” Page 195
Mr. Wyly talked about how companies that don't adapt will die off. He shows target as an example of a company that changes their supply to fit the demand. He then talks about how kmart didn't change and therefore declined in business
I enjoyed how he spoke about one of the most important aspects of business, supply and demand. he mentioned that the company Target changes their supplies to fit the demands, and so they will not die off. I also like how he spoke about enjoying what he does. it is important that you do something you like so you can make a living out of it.
